    Pickled Turnips

If you have ever been for Shawarma before you may have had these delicious little morsels in your pita. I absolutely love pickled turnips! You can buy these at the store canned for you, but the homemade ones are far superior. These add a great punch to any middle eastern style wrap. This recipe is adapted slightly from a David Lebovitz recipe. David Lebovitz The beautiful pink hue comes from adding a beet into the mix, it will naturally color the turnips, which makes them very ‘pretty’ as well. These are a great little item to have in your fridge. I also enjoy these with eggs, yogurt, and pita for breakfast.…

    Pickled Jalapenos

I love pickled Jalapenos! They are great to jazz up a taco or a sandwich or nachos. We keep these stocked in our fridge most times. Super easy to make and they keep in the fridge for a whole year, if they last that long! If you followed my old blog, this is a repost from a while back. Some of my content didn’t move over to the new platform when I tried to merge it all. Apparently that process was much more ‘technically challenging’ than I hoped it would be. This makes 2 small mason jars full or 1 large one. This recipe is not my own it is…

    Pickled Red Onions

We are prepping for ‘Taco Tuesday’ here today by making these Pickled Red Onions. When did that become a thing? Truthfully, we have taco’s whenever we feel like it around here, whether it’s Tuesday or not, but it did make it easier when I was thinking of what to make for supper tomorrow. This is a very simple recipe. I’ve been doing a few ‘condiment’ recipes the last couple of days, they are great recipes to have in your repertoire though as they can add great punch and flavor to simple dishes. Tomorrow we are having Slow Cooker Pork ‘Chilorio’ Tacos, and these red onions go perfectly with them. The…

    Spicy Korean Cucumber Kimchi

Post two this morning comes from another Pinterest recipe Spicy Korean Cucumber Kimchi I’ve been meaning to try. Geesh look what happens when I clean out my refrigerator!  I love the feeling of nothing going to waste. My friend Brent usually brings me some cucumbers each summer from his Dad’s garden.  I just happened to have another large bag of these on hand and decided to give this recipe a try. For me Kimchi was not a ‘Love at First Sight” thing.  When I lived in Calgary years ago, I used to house exchange students – and the majority of them were from Korea.  That was my first introduction to Kimchi,…

Some Green Beans, Egg Sandwiches and a Lazy Rainy Saturday

Life has been so busy lately. I’ve been really craving some downtime. Today just happens to be one of those glorious days.  It’s such a nice feeling to wake up and lazily brew a pot of good coffee, play a Frazey Ford album and tinker away in my kitchen. I wish every day could be like that. I have a mission today to clean out my fridge and use up some of the ingredients in there.  So far I’ve made some quick pickled dilly beans recipe found on one of my favourite blogs Dilly Beans – Shutterbean and then enjoyed a lazy breakfast with my youngest son.   Fresh dill, green…

    Quick Pickled Radishes

Radishes I feel are somewhat of an under appreciated, underused vegetable.  I found a beautiful Rainbow Radish Mix that I picked up at our grocers this week and I was trying to think of a use for them, so not to waste. I decided to make quick pickled radishes – these take minutes to make and would be a great addition to sandwiches, tacos – or even just a few on your plate.  Crunchy and refreshing – lets not forget the humble radish. I found this recipe on a site called Garden Therapy.  The only thing I switched out was the vinegar.  It called for apple cider vinegar which I…

    Strawberry Honeyberry Jam

What a great day!  Checked out a Berry Farm close to our house, for some berry picking with the boys.  We picked Strawberries and Honeyberries….so absolutely delish!  The strawberries were so sweet and it was such a great experience for the kids.  The place we went does not use pesticides which is great too. Once we had all the berries home (the ones that made it here anyway) – not sure how many strawberries the boys devoured on the ride home.  Eating strawberries like this really makes you realize how crappy the grocery store strawberries really are. This is only the second time I have made jam and I the…
