Homemade Naan

Once you make this Homemade Naan bread for the first time, you will definitely want to make it again. Super easy to make and so soft and chewy and delicious. These would be perfect to accompany a nice bowl of curry, or I am using ours tonight as the base for a middle eastern style wrap.

We like serve ours drizzled with some garlic butter and fresh herbs while they are still hot. I also like to put little nigella seeds on the Naan (which are crunchy with a flavour similar to toasted onions) but if you don’t have them don’t worry these are still great without.

This makes 8 servings of Naan Bread.

INGREDIENTS:

  • Approx. 3 cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup lukewarm milk
  • 3 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • 3 Tbsp Plain Yogurt (I like a full fat thick yogurt)
  • 2 tsp yeast
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 Tbsp honey
  • Nigella Seeds (optional)
  • Garlic butter (optional) melt 1/2 cup butter with 3-4 cloves chopped garlic.

In a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook add your lukewarm water, honey and yeast. Stir a little then let sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast is poofed. Once ready add in your lukewarm milk, olive oil and yogurt. Mix together your flour and salt in a separate bowl. Add the flour mixture in slowly. Once dough forms into a smooth bowl and pulls away from the side of the mixture you will know it’s done. If it’s too wet add in 1 Tbsp of flour at a time until it just pulls away from the sides.

Place into an oiled bowl and cover and let rise in a warm place for about 60-90 minutes until doubled.

Once the dough is done, divide into about 8 portions. The dough should be nice and easy to work with and you shouldn’t need a rolling pin, you can just shape with your hands. At this point if you have nigella seeds you can pour a few on the counter and press the dough as you shape it into them so they stick.

In a dry non-stick pan or cast iron pan over medium heat place your shaped dough, one at a time and cook for a few minutes or so on each side until browned and done.

Remove, drizzle with garlic butter and fresh herbs if desired.
